The Internet Jungle in NZ: What You Really Need to Know About "Unlimited Fibre"

You’ve probably seen those tempting deals — “Unlimited Fibre from just $XX/month!” It sounds good, right? Unlimited data, fibre speeds, no worries?

Well… yes and no.

Let’s break it down without the tech babble so you can make smarter choices and avoid being sold a donkey when you thought you were buying a racehorse.

"Unlimited" Doesn't Mean "Fast"

Here’s the first myth-buster:
Unlimited Fibre means you can use as much data as you want, but it doesn’t mean your internet will be fast.

That’s because speed and data are two very different things:

  • Unlimited data = You can stream, scroll, download, and Zoom all day and night without running out of data.

  • Speed = How fast your internet actually works. Think of it like the speed of a car — you might have unlimited petrol, but you’re still stuck in a 50km/h car if you’re on a basic plan.

What Fibre Speeds Can You Get in NZ?

Here are the main fibre speed plans available in New Zealand (as of now):

Plan Name Download Speed Upload Speed What it’s like in real life
Basic Fibre 30 30 Mbps 10 Mbps Fine for emails and browsing
Fibre 100 100 Mbps 20 Mbps Good for streaming, video calls
Fibre 300 300 Mbps 100 Mbps Great for families, streaming, gaming
Fibre Max / Gig 700–950 Mbps 400–500 Mbps Superfast — great for offices, large households, or heavy internet use

Note: Mbps = Megabits per second — higher = faster.

How to Check What You’ve REALLY Got

Want to know what speed you’re getting at your place right now? Do a quick internet speed test:

It only takes about 30 seconds. Here’s how to understand what you’re seeing:

What the Results Mean

  • Download Speed – This is the big one. It’s how fast stuff comes to you — streaming Netflix, browsing the web, downloading a file.

    • Good: 100 Mbps or more

    • Slow: Below 50 Mbps (especially if you’ve got a fibre plan)

  • Upload Speed – This is how fast you can send things — video calls, sending photos, uploading to the cloud.

    • Good: 20 Mbps or higher

    • Slow: Below 10 Mbps (you’ll notice it on Zoom calls!)

  • Ping (ms) – The time it takes for data to travel to a server and back. Lower is better.

    • Under 30ms is great

    • Over 100ms = lag, especially in gaming

  • Jitter – Measures how consistent your connection is.

    • Under 30ms is fine

    • High jitter = choppy calls and buffering videos

So Why Are Some Plans Slower Than Others If They’re All "Fibre"?

It comes down to what the telco sold you. Some providers advertise “Unlimited Fibre” plans at lower speeds like 30 or 100 Mbps to keep the price down. They’re banking on you not checking.

And if you're still using an older modem, or your Wi-Fi router isn’t up to scratch, even a fast fibre connection can feel like dial-up.
